Notts 10, Sleaford 10K & Newark Half

It’s been an action packed weekend for the Newark Striders, with gold medals, half marathons and so much more to report on, so let’s make a start.

Friday evening and Lewis Hopkinson and Peter Davis were amongst the starting line-up in the Notts AC 10 miler at Holme Pierrepont, a race which also incorporated the Notts County Championships over the 10 mile distance and the pair, both already age category county champions in other distances this summer had their sights firmly set upon gold. Lew finished in 1:01:11, 20th overall, 6th MV40 in the Notts AC race and Gold Medal for 1st place MV45 in the county champs. Peter’s time was 1:14:33 which earned him 1st place in the Notts AC race MV60 category and the Gold Medal in the county champs MV65.

Also on Friday, 6 Newark Striders were in the village of Screddington, Lincolnshire which was the start and finish location for the popular Sleaford Striders Summer 10K. Conditions were ideal after all of the hot weather and it was a really enjoyable event held on quiet rural lanes. Jan Bailey was 2nd overall and 1st in the M40-49 age category with 34:53. Jess Gordon had a great run, finishing with 46:07 and picking up the 3rd place trophy in the women’s race. Graham Welsh was next over the line for the club in 48:28 followed by Philippa Clarke 50:02, Tom Young 50:03 and Stephen Tomlinson 53:32.

Closer to home, Sunday also saw the Nottingham 10K, Ted Behl was in fine form setting a new PB of 44:20 and Michelle Starbuck recorded a time of 56:21. Even closer to home, it was a big day for the club and the town with the running of 2018 Newark Half Marathon. There were 728 runners on the day, and Jan Bailey was the 34th of them to finish and 7th V40 in a time of 1:24:29. Not too far behind in 49th place overall, with a new PB of 1:26:47 was Simon Roberts, running on behalf of Beaumond House. Mark Jackson was in 55th place and 10th V40 with 1:28:07, followed by Olly Craughan 1:33:16 then Gary Tasker 1:34:35 and 10th V45.

It was a great result for Danielle Forsey, her 1:41:02 earned her 12th position in the women’s race and 8th place in the Sen F category. Peter Davis was next in 1:41:47, 1st V65, followed by 5 new PB times with Dave Dews 1:42:55, Nige Driscoll 1:47:27 beating his previous best time by 3 minutes, Kris Fenton 1:50:11, Richard Webster 1:50:33 and Emma Gilbert 7th V40 1:50:48. Graham Welsh covered the course in 1:52:50, Mark Winter 1:55:04 and Chris Draper delivered on his plan to go sub 2 hrs for the first time with a super new PB of 1:59:07.

Andy Sirrs finished in 2:07:06 PB, Dan Endersby 2:11:25, Zoe Troop first half marathon 2:12:20 PB, Lesley Butlin 2:13:24 PB, Nicole Henderson 2:22:08 PB, Rob Wilkinson 2:26:31, Tracey Mayfield 2:35:08 PB, Bev Hancock 3:02:47, Holly Davis 3:02:47 and Sara Whittaker 3:02:48.

It would be wrong not to echo Jacqui’s notes at this point and mention all who volunteered and those club members on the organising committee Philippa Clarke, Peter and Holly Davis, Cate Driscoll Noel, Henderson and Steve Martin, who have been working on the Half Marathon for months.

What a weekend, well done everyone!
