Leicester Half, Valentine 30K & Turkey Trot

Graham’s weekend Sports report

It was a busy weekend for Newark Striders. Saturday saw around 50 of us complete Parkrun, including members of our Step into Striders programme, split evenly between Sconce Park and Belton House with a few other locations thrown in for good measure.

Onto Sunday and there was a good turnout for distance training with many supporting the Newark Half Marathon ‘All Clubs’ run alongside our friends from other local clubs.
There were some mega-miles clocked up, with Hannah Thomson and Mark Jackson pushing out beyond 20 miles and others not far short of that.

In terms of racing, let’s start in Keyworth where 4 Striders lined up for the rescheduled Turkey Trot Half Marathon to take on the energy sapping hills and icy wind.
Dave Dews was first Strider home in 1:44:07, knocking 4 minutes off his PB (nice one Dave), next back in 1:44:30 was Dave Tilley pacing 1:45 on behalf of the organisers, followed by Nick Beveridge 1:49:27 and finally Graham Welsh 1:59:28.
Meanwhile over the county border (though the courses were only 2 miles apart at the closest point) Gary Tasker was participating in the inaugural Leicestershire Half Marathon.
Gary finished the tough course in an excellent time, 1:35:59.
Our final stop is Stamford, where 9 Newark Striders made the trip down the A1 for the St Valentine’s 30K.
Continuing the theme for the day, the course was gruelling, with hail and over 1100 FT of ‘uphill’, but that didn’t stop Jan Bailey who finished the 18.7 miles in an amazing 2:00:31.
Second to cross the line in 2:23:42 was Simon Palmer and third was our first woman finisher Philippa Clarke 2:41:31.
Next in orange was Jon Rawson 2:45:45, then Stacey Atkins 3:32:41, Becky Clift 3:32:48, Heather Green 3:45:49, Jenny Palmer 3:46:18 and Anthea Moisey 4:15:06.
At a conservative estimate, as calculated on the back of an envelope, we ran upwards of 600 miles between us this weekend, about the distance from Newark to Berlin.
Well done everyone!
